Dr. Irving L. Weissman, director of the Stanford Cancer and Stem Cell Institute, is widely known as one of the founders of stem cell biology and was the first scientist to identify and isolate stem cells in any species. He has received numerous awards including California Scientist of the Year in 2002. His laboratory has also developed a model organism for laboratory and field study of allorecognition—the invertebrate counterpart of transplantation immunity. Dr. Weissman has also been an effective spokesman and advocate for stem cell research.  A transcript of his brief testimony before congress on this matter can be obtained on the web at http://www.grg.org/IWeissman1.htm

Dr. Weissman was interviewed for the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation by Richard M. Cohen, former CBS News Senior Producer and Emmy award winner. http://www.laskerfoundation.org/news/weis/weissmant.html
